Marion Benjamin

Principal

Marion is the Principal of Dawson Lawyers and Wollongong Conveyancing Services, heading the practice since early 2021. Marion brings a wealth of life experiences to her law practice, having worked as a documentary filmmaker, professional researcher, academic and manager of a regional community environmental organisation. Moving from the Riverina to the Illawarra in 2018 was a much desired return to live on the coast. Practicing law by the sea is the best of all worlds.

Marion is an experienced Family Lawyer dealing with all aspects of family disputes in including property, parenting, same sex and defacto couples, divorce, domestic violence and is a passionate advocate for clients and social justice. Dawson Lawyers is committed to acting for legally aided and private clients alike. Marion also practices in Wills & Estates, in civil matters and is a regular volunteer at the Illawarra Legal Centre.

Originally from Victoria, Marion is a staunch AFL devotee and proud mother of a teenager selected for the Illawarra Regional Representative team. Footy by day and music by night, Marion is a jazz fiend and currently the Vice President of the Sydney Improvised Music Association.

Stephen Dawson

Associate

Stephen is the Founder of Dawson Lawyers and Wollongong Conveyancing Services. Stephen was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 1977 and the High Court of Australia in 1980. Stephen is a Law Society of New South Wales Accredited Specialist in Property Law and has been for over 20 years.

Stephen understands the issues faced by his clients and prides himself on explaining the law and the rights of his clients in a clear and concise manner. Stephen represents both individuals and businesses in all legal matters.

Stephen is an active member of the Illawarra community and currently sits on the board of “Greenacres Disability Services” and “Illawarra Diggers Aged and Community Care”.

When Stephen is not at the office you can often find him sailing or spending time with his family.

Kate Setter

Solicitor

Our intrepid Junior Solicitor, Kate is a key member of our Family Law and Wills & Estates team. Kate started out as paralegal with our Principal in 2020 and was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of NSW July 2021. Kate’s admission was thwarted by the Covid lockdown but Dawson Lawyers rose to the occasion and the Supreme Court came to Wollongong presided over by Chief Justice Benjamin (aka our Principal) and Justice Dawson (aka our Associate.) A great day replete with red robes, wigs and champagne.

Kate graduated from University of Wollongong in 2020 with a double degree in Law and Psychological Science. Growing up in the Illawarra, Kate is a keen bike rider making the most of the beautiful coastal pathways on offer.

Getting her hands dirty is a special joy for Kate whose veggie garden boasts a regular offering of zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs.

Jackie Pipe

Licensed Conveyancer

Jackie is our Licensed Conveyancer.

Jackie joined Dawson Lawyers and Wollongong Conveyancing Services in 2017 assisting in Conveyancing and Property matters.

After beginning her legal career in a Top Tier Sydney law firm, Jackie relocated to the Illawarra and is enjoying the family-focused and personalised service a smaller law firm offers.

Jackie completed the Associate Degree in Law (Paralegal Studies) through Southern Cross University in 2004 majoring in conveyancing. Jackie has been a licenced Conveyancer since 2018.  

Jackie is also a Justice of the Peace registered in New South Wales.

On the weekends Jackie is the supreme ‘soccer mum’ juggling three children who have to be in three different locations all at the same time for different sports. Somehow Jackie then manages to fit in her own game as a formidable wing attack in Netball.

Alison Edwards

Paralegal
Alison is a Paralegal with over 30 years’ experience. She was born in the Illawarra and has a wealth of knowledge in Conveyancing, Estate matters & Wills. Alison has worked for a number of large Sydney firms and first worked with Stephen Dawson in the '90s.

Alison has been a member of Dawson Lawyers since 2017 working in Wills and Estates and is a Justice of the Peace registered in New South Wales.

Alison is an active member of Albion Park Show Society and current Secretary. And to top that, Alison has for the past ten years been a Woodchop Judge for the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW.

Alison is proudly the mother of a daughter announced winner of the 2021 NSW Young Farmers Challenge Competition.

And in all her spare time, Alison is a needleworker extraordinaire and Needlework Show Judge.

Trinity Maat

Legal Assistant

Trinity joined our team in 2018 doing a Business Traineeship in which she excelled and was nominated for “NSW Trainee of the Year” in the NSW Trainee Awards for that year. Now a valued Legal Secretary in the property and conveyancing team, Trinity is in her third year of her Associate Degree in Law (Paralegal Studies) Majoring in Conveyancing through Southern Cross University. Planning to graduate in 2022 Trinity’s goal is to qualify as a Licenced Conveyancer.

Trinity has submitted her application to become a registered Justice of the Peace in NSW.

On weekends Trinity is enjoying the trials and tribulations which go with building a first home and can offer our first-home buyer clients firsthand experience of stamp duty and grant opportunities available.

To let off steam, Trinity is an active Squash Club member playing in a local women’s competition since in her teen years.

Brooke Grootemaat

Receptionist

Brooke began working with the Dawson Lawyers, Wollongong Conveyancing team in 2019 as a trainee, completing her Business Traineeship through the College of Commerce and Management in that year.

Brooke is one of our friendly Legal Secretaries and assists our Wills and Estates and Family Law teams.

Brooke’s work attire is actually a disguise. Come close of business hours, Brooke true character comes out…as a character. A Harry Potter aficionado, Brooke has read every Harry Potter book, seen each film too many times to count and partied on her 21st birthday in the guise of Draco Malfoy – just because.
